Since I was a child, Cannon Beach, Oregon has had my heart. I wish I could visit more frequently than I do, but I go there often in my mind. Whenever I crave a deeper sense of inner calm, I imagine staring out at Haystack Rock. It transports me to a place of peace, regardless of what’s happening around me. I’ve gone there in my head during countless blood tests, biopsies, surgeries, personal confrontations and sleepless nights. On Wednesday, as we received news of loved ones in harm’s way with the fires, my daughter left a note on my bed that said, “Sweet dreams! Think of the beach.” She reminded me that even though we cannot always control what’s happening around us, we can do our very best to re-direct our thoughts.
