Today is the 10-year anniversary of my preventive double mastectomy and (start of) reconstruction. I like to honor this day, though I do not think of it too much anymore. This decision set the tone for so many choices that would come later. This surgery finally forced me to face my PTSD from earlier illness, which saved my life. This surgery would eventually force me to acknowledge choices I had made that were based on society’s definitions of happiness, wellness and success, rather than my own, which would in time breathe new life into me. This surgery would make me realize the lost opportunity of a “yes” that should have been a “no,” which would lead to many last cuts, including my explant surgery two years ago. I have had the incredible privilege to revisit choices and rewrite stories for which I am grateful every single day. Lasting change starts with one decision, but it happens with time and dedication. One strong choice leads to another and another. We build on our own learning and grow in community with those who see us as the best versions of ourselves. The more trust we find within ourselves, the clearer the path forward becomes. Here’s to forward movement for us all. {Photo by Elisa Goodkind of @stylelikeu}
