Stronger love has grown in my life since I committed to loving myself. Relationships have become more nourishing, powerful and special. Old connections have deepened. New ones (the healthy new ones) arrive there more quickly. In looking back, I have compassion for the young(er) woman who sought to love and be loved without a firm grounding yet within herself. The person who said “yes” to being, thinking, acting and looking a certain way with the hope of being loved for doing the right thing and of fitting into an acceptable mold. To seek to fill and be filled externally is far easier than taking the time to figure out how to be present, available and caring for ourselves. The ongoing effort is far worth the pause, pondering and pain that accompany a firm dedication to self-discovery. The love for self, and others, on the other side of each unraveling is always far more exceptional than we can imagine.
